Crowd funding campaign for the MakePlace.

By Paul Dutch, October 22nd, 2012

Crowd funding is a nice and democratic way of raising money for something that you are passionate about. That's why we have created a PledgeMe campaign to raise funds for our first piece of equipment for the MakePlace.

The PledgeMe Campaign

Hold on.. What is the MakePlace?

Well..
Reading the comments on the Post that I had written a little while back on how to retain young talent in the bay (Read post here) I decided that just writing about it wouldn't cut the mustard. I would have to come up with a solution that at least changes the small world around myself a little bit.

So I thought about how I could use my interests and experience to come up with a good small step towards changing things a little.
What I came up with is to setup a place that in itself could create challenges, lets people find solutions and could be a small generator of start up businesses. We called it the MakePlace.

The MakePlace will be a place in Napier where you can come to meet, learn and build (almost) anything. Think of it as a gym that you join, but instead of using the equipment to exercise your body, you use them to create and make. In other words, it is a place to make your own..

The MakePlace is a shared urban workshop (also known as a hackerspace, makerspace, fablab) where everyone is invited to work and create. The people that become members of our MakePlace are inventors, entrepreneurs, makers, hackers, tinkerers, artists and arts and crafts enthusiasts. They learn new skills from those alongside them and collaborate on projects they could not do alone. We would facilitate Art, Science, Technology and all other types of creative enterprise to happen at our urban workshop by giving access to the space and the tools in our facility.

Learn more about the MakePlace on our website.

Back to the PledgeMe campaign..

PledgeMe is the local New Zealand based alternative to sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. It is a great platform to raise funds but also to raise awareness.
Through the campaign we are  raising money for a 3D printer. You must have seen these incredible machines on TV or on the Interweb. It is a machine with which you can essentially create any shape object you can think of and print it straight from the computer. It has great potential and we want to give access to one of these great machines to the local Hawkes Bay people.

So please visit and share the PledgeMe campaign so that we can start making the MakePlace a reality!
Thank you!

  1. Totally totally awesome! I’ve just pledged a 3D Tweet2eat Red Bird for printing.

If you haven’t got your company logo or mascot printed in 3D yet, go here and get it done: https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/Crowd/Details/543

    Well done Paul.

  2. Cheers Ryan!
Your Tweet2Eat Bird will look great in 3D!
Now all we need is to get the rest of the money pledged and we can get it printed!

  3. Fantastic Paul! Like you said, just talking about the challenges HB faces won’t cut the mustard, and so you’ve gone and done something about it – excellent. Really interested to see this project come to life. Signed up and keen to help support. Just this evening I’ve been contemplating whether we should be moving our young children to Australia, not just for opportunities for us but also for them in the future. Will post your pledge on Her HB https://www.facebook.com/HerHB

  4. Thanks Hayley! Appreciated!

Yes, the ol’ decision to move to the dark side..
    Tempting indeed..
I do hope you feel you can find enough opportunities for both you and your kids right here in the HB!

  5. Brilliant Paul great to see some action will spread the word !

  6. Awesome!

  7. Exactly what we thought!

  8. PledgeMe campaign over 20% funded!

A quick update for the Fruitbowl readers..
Our PledgeMe campaign for the Makeplace is already over 20% funded! Yay!
Check our PledgeMe Campaign regulary for updates here: https://www.pledgeme.co.nz/543

Big thanks to our supporters so far!

  9. Hi All,

Guess what we got for Christmas!?

Exactly! A 3D printer! The exact one that we were trying to raise funds for through PledgeMe! How great is that!?
    Thanks Santa!
Well.. it wasn’t quite Santa.. We decided to try and scratch funds together by reaching into our own life savings and buy the 3D printer. Raising the funds through PledgeMe would have made things a lot easier, but who said life was meant to be easy, right?

So.. Good news for the MakePlace, but also for everyone who pledged us funds to have a 3D print done. Now we can grant your wish! Just send us an email and we’ll get it sorted out for the same amount that you pledged for if you’re still keen!

For all other pledgers that have pledged for non-3D printed rewards, please also send us an email and we will grant you your reward for the amount that was listed on our campaign.

Our email: info @ makeplace.co.nz or use the contact form on our website makeplace.co.nz.

Obviously if you want to see the printer or have something that you’d like to see printed, drop us a line as well!

Keep updated by checking our website http://www.makeplace.co.nz every now and again!
