Using social media to build personal/professional learning networks.

With the proliferation of web2.0 tools and the ensuing information overload as everyone has become a publisher, it can be hard to keep the signal-to-noise ratio down. However, these very social media tools can also help. They can be used to build a filter – a professional learning network - that will help you navigate your way around networks to connect with knowledge and experts to inform your everyday practice. This presentation will look at common elements of social media and include examples and stories from those who rely on their PLN every day.

Student Presentations
Students will be displaying their posters developed for their final BCS degree project (developed around a project undertaken for industry or an internship in industry). You will have the opportunity to discuss their final project with them. There will also be 10 minute presentations from two of the Students.

About the Speaker
Joyce Seitzinger is an e-learning instructional designer and project manager who has worked on online learning projects since 1999. Despite having a Bachelors Degree in Celtic Studies, one of her first jobs was in e-learning and its creative and innovative nature has kept her there. Joyce moved to New Zealand in 2006 to work as e-learning advisor in tertiary education, currently at EIT Hawke's Bay. She has a Master of Education Technology from the University of Southern Queensland and is the co-convenor of the ITPNZ eLearning Forum. Her special interests include Moodle, networked learning, instructional design & staff development for e-learning.

Sounds great, looking forward to it!

  2. On a similar theme, there is a TED Talks video on how social networking through technology (e.g., Facebook, Skype, texting, emails) is used to cultivate deeper relationships, despite the barrier of distance and attempts by some employers to control such interaction.
