AVATAR

By Wray Wilson, December 1st, 2009

Avatar - The Future of Film?

So maybe just a touch of self interest here, but this month sees the release of one of the years’ biggest films – purportedly one that will change the face of cinema.

In his first directorial role since Titanic, James Cameron’s Avatar is coming out on 17 December (we get to see it first in good ol’ NZ).

Cameron penned Avatar many years ago and waited until technology had developed sufficiently to allow him to make it the way he wanted.  Enter Weta Workshops and the rest they say is history.

The vast majority of the live action scenes were filmed over two years ago in Wellington and since then the film has been in post production and putting together the extensive CGI (which makes up some 50% of the content ).

The cast has its share of big names such as Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez but you’ll also recognise a fair number NZ actors in small roles and in the large cast of extras.

To get the full benefit of Cameron’s vision the film really needs to be viewed in 3-D, Avatar being the first big budget block buster to be filmed entirely in this way.

Below is a snap from the film – if you look closely you might even recognise the bald guy.

  1. Should almost have been cross-posted into Hawke’s Bay People, shouldn’t it, Wray? ;)

  2. Looks like we need some red carpet in the hallway between our offices eh Wray?

  3. I preferred the old blue/green pre-renovation carpet Ben.

  4. FX Networks is proud to provide the connection between Weta Digital and Hollywood.

  5. That’s awesome Wray! Ha ha. Hope you get a credit!

(I didn’t as 22nd henchman on the1985 Leif Garrett epic ‘Shaker Run’ .)

  6. I’m angling for the whole Oscar Rod. Shaker Run looked like quality cinema!

  7. Jamie – that is pretty sick! Good on you guys.
Wray – is that art imitating life? Were you ever in jungle greens like that – or were you mostly in Waiouru desert browns? Did you get to move up the ranks in the movie?

  8. Wray – as I keep saying your talent is wasted in ICT!!! Anyone know how to potentially attract Weta Workshops to Hawke’s Bay?

  9. i like fiesty girls and michelle rodriguez is a really fiesty girl that i love to marry ;::
