I always knew we were on to a good thing here in the Hawke’s Bay, but it struck me last week how we not only sometimes take it for granted but also forget to enjoy what we are living here for in the first place!
Last week my wife and I (with kids in tow) thought we’d have a go at commuting into town from our bach at Waipatiki Beach – an arduous 35 minute drive no less!
Apart from starting each day with the sound of a dawn chorus, I also paddled out to sea at 5.15am and lifted my crayfish pots. Over three consecutive mornings I took home my quota of crayfish!
Each day I was in the office by 8.30 (7.15am one day may I add) starting the day with an overwhelming sense of satisfaction that I’d already managed to wedge in some work-life balance before the day had even started!
I cast my mind back to my days in Sydney where I only lived 4.5 kms from the office and it would take all of 35 minutes to get home on a bus during peak hour traffic. Pursuing something that offered some work-life balance at either end of the day was more often not attained simply because of the effort required to pursue this.
We are onto a great thing here in Hawke’s Bay and I think we all need to take hide of our respective quests to generate a livelihood and not forget to enjoy and take in what’s on offer.
Here for a short time, not a long time, so make it a good time I say!
Who else out there is living the dream?

Paul – Spot ‘X’ of course! Can be a little hit and miss – the first 2 days I got nothing.

Yeah that’s an awesome spot. We spend most of two weeks out at Waipatiki every Christmas in the family bach. Even with the commute it’s a pretty sweet deal.
Luckily for me we’ve got a compulsory closedown this year and my wife is off til 5 January, so we’ll only have to come into town for the beer run every couple of days!
