Our Wine to China – a developing market

By Fruitbowl, June 28th, 2010

PR from Craig Foss and Chris Tremain

‘Developing new markets for our Wine is a very high priority,’ said Tukituki MP Craig Foss, ‘and China is one such significant market.’

In 2009 New Zealand wine exports to China were worth $14.2 million or 1.4 per cent of all our wine exports.

‘We know China is a challenging market to break into,’ said Mr. Tremain. ‘There is distribution, logistic and regulatory issues however we believe with support our chances of success are greatly enhanced; and there is massive room for growth.’

The Government is allocating up to $200,000 to support detailed analysis of the market and its consumer preferences. There will also be the development of a New Zealand wine strategy for this market.

‘China is one of our fastest growing trading partners and we believe it to be a very important and extremely exciting developing market for our wines; the potential is enormous, said Mr. Tremain.

‘The support given by the Government to help our wine industry better understand this market has the capability of paying huge dividends, “said Mr. Foss

  1. My wife is heading to China from Bangkok today, as a matter of interest she is going to see if she can find any NZ or HB wine. Will report back on progress.

  2. very keen to hear about what she finds. Keep us posted.

  3. My wife reports that she didn’t see any NZ wines in China at all, they were over in southern China at Guangzhou (pop 11.8 million) in the Liwan district. She saw a few Australina wines though… I wonder how many wine drinkers there are in that 11.8 million!

  4. Hrmmmm bit of an old post to dredge up, but it looks like the Ozzies are taking the Chinese market very seriously… according to this (Australian) Blog:

Although it seems Jacobs Creek isn’t just exporting their wines, but exporting wines specifically developed for the Chinese market.

As an aside… I visited Jacobs Creek in Nov last year and the duty manager there told me that they don’t export their Savs to NZ because ours are too good and theirs could never compete!

I work for Pernod Ricard NZ and it was a huge achievement for our Global Comms team – 600 PR China staff in what our company believes to be the wine industries biggest inbound promotional venture. Got some massive media coverage http://australianetworknews.com/stories/201007/2959938.htm?desktop
