One of my favourite things to do in the Bay is the Farmers Market at Tomoana show grounds on Sunday mornings.
I often take the kids down so the lady of the house gets a sleep in. Feels so good being out in the sun while scoring big time home points. It’s compulsory to hit the market when you have out of towners staying.
We have a pretty regular routine. A ritual coffee and banter/abuse from Bruce at Aurum. Cup cakes from Kaye, florentines for later, berry smoothies for the little ones and find something yummy for tea. Often from the Firstlight stand.
The Bay really is foodies heaven, and it’s great to always bump into a few people for a catch up. Last weekend Ruth Pretty was wandering around enjoying our set up.
Must just be a couple of weeks until the market moves back outside and we can bring back the red wagon, picnic blanket and sun umbrellas to camp out and listen to the music.

The Farmers’ Market is one of the ‘Stars’ of Hawke’s Bay. Everyone loves it, some of our best producers are there, and yet after speaking to some of the good people at Food HB last year, it sounds like they are heavily under-resourced and unable to provide the support to their members that they would like. Hawke’s Bay is a region of Food & Wine (obviously among other things), but definitely marketed as such – so what is being done to help Food HB out?
