  1. Local Internet site http://www.hawkesbay.co.nz had its busiest day ever with over 8,000 people visiting the site on Sunday to get up to the minute focus on the Chilean Tsunami and its effects on Hawke’s Bay.

The site featured over 40 breaking stories from live witness reports in Chile, links to official sites such as The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, Civil Defence in Hastings, Napier, The Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence & Emergency Management Group and including seismographs, webcams and even the Mayor of Hasting’s Facebook page.

All stories were added to the website’s Twitter page and Facebook pages automatically.

Directors Malcolm Ballantine and Max Patmoy thought it was huge, a few months ago, when they had the Samoan Tsunami story with over 5,000 visitors.

Now having 8000 visitors shows the emergence of internet and social media such as twitter & facebook, as a major platform for public communication in disasters.

All stories were added to the website’s Twitter page and Facebook pages automatically.

  2. Hay Damon, thanks for sharing… Those are certainly some astounding stats. Somehow most of my friends and family still consider me to be some sort of uber web nerd because of my Twitter use (which is only very occasional I might add!) So for all those figures contained in that video clip I kind of get the feeling we’re really only just seeing the tip of the iceberg!

Facebook is a slightly different story though… it has completely replaced our family grapevine!!

  3. Here’s a video with a similar theme that I used in presentations a couple of years ago to illustrate the shift in the way we interact with information due to the growth of the internet – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4CV05HyAbM Worth watching although already outdated!

  4. This is also a great video. I bet you will watch it more than once. Keep your finger on the pause, you may not believe some of the facts and figures. http://www.youtube.com/user/xplanevisualthinking

  5. Max that looks like a great book, and a fantastic concept.
    Thanks for sharing that.

We uploaded a similar video to yours Damon on YouTube awhile back…similar facts and figures, however we focused more on NZ Businesses and a few ways they could take advantage of social media to increase sales http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LynoKpVNnY

I think one of the main advantages with social media for businesses at the moment is to get customers ‘raving’ about their product and services…essentially “free” word of mouth advertising to a wide customer base.

The more customers posting good comments on a business/brand, the more exposure and more customers they can achieve.

http://www.rephub.co.nz is one place NZ businesses can get customers ‘raving’ about their products/brands, however there are so many social network sites out there (especially if you offer a global product) that there really is no limit to your exposure.
