A unique education grant has been launched to encourage tertiary study in Hawke’s Bay with service in the New Zealand Army’s Territorial Forces.

The grant is a combination of paid work in the territorial forces and study at EIT.

The grant, sponsored by Geon Print and Communication Solutions and The Services Charitable Trust, is being offered to Hawke’s Bay high school and EIT students who train in the volunteer force and study at EIT. Neville Smith, Geon’s General Manager – Central North Island and Lieutenant Commander of the Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve, says “this is an opportunity for students to kick-start their military service while staying in Hawke’s Bay and getting an education.”

Successful applicants will do 52 days recruit training in Waiouru and then pick up studies at EIT. They will also be required to put in 20 days a year working some weekends with the reserves. Territorial Force personnel receive a daily rate of pay for any training attended.

The $2000 grant is to be paid in four staged allocations.

Applicants must be aged 17 years or over and meet entry criteria for the reserves and for their selected programme of study at EIT. Women and men are eligible and must live in the Hawke’s Bay region – from Wairoa to Dannevirke.

Applications close on 10 September and the successful grant winners will be announced on November 1.

The grant winners will be assigned to the 7th Wellington Hawkes Bay Battalion based in Napier. The recruit training can be completed between mid November to January (with a break for Christmas and New Year’s) or from February to April at Waiouru. Upon graduation they will be fully fledged members of the 7th Wellington Hawkes Bay Battalion, an infantry battalion that can trace its history back to 1863.

Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Harker of the New Zealand Army’s 7th Battalion, based in Napier, said “the grant gives the recipients a chance to have it all.”

“Combining tertiary study with army training while living at home in Hawke’s Bay is unique to the region and is a great opportunity for students.”

The training, physically demanding and with an emphasis on team dynamics, problem solving and adventure activities, will be followed by EIT study in the second semester.

After completing study at EIT, applicants will be able to apply to any of the services within the Defence Force.

There are three grants available per year for the next three years.

I finally have information regards the TechNZ 2010 Undergraduate Student Interns Programme. TechNZ will fund $16/hr plus GST for maximum of 400hrs during the Xmas break from universities (between Nov and February).

A project MUST be defined for the student, general work experience is not acceptable and the project must have a technological focus.

Project

Project MUST have a technological focus e.g. Engineering, Food & Beverage, IT, Agriculture, Horticulture, Viticulture, Winemaking, etc.

NOT be accounts, sales, business or marketing focus.

Project does not have to be novel R&D. Can be project, process, efficiency focussed.

Project MUST be defined, not just general work experience.

Must have benefit for business and student.

Student

Project MUST be appropriate to the student’s qualification.

3rd or 4th year for a degree undergraduate.

Diploma must be NZQA Level 7 or above.

If you have not identified a student we can assist by supplying contact details for universities with suitable qualifications.

TechNZ are inviting companies to submit a 1 page expression of interest by mid August 2010. The one pager will ask for an outline of company details, brief overview of the project and benefit to your business.

TechNZ will select projects based on quality of the company (good R&D environment for student) and project. We will then select companies who we will pre-approve to go ahead and find and engage a student.

Please contact me if you have any questions or are interested in pursuing this and we can discuss your project.

From 2011 EIT will “thank you for not smoking” anywhere on our main campus and our five regional learning centres.

By offering a smokefree environment we are taking a leadership role in ensuring we provide a healthy environment to work and learn.

In New Zealand, around 5,000 people per annum die from smoking related illnesses of which 400 of these die through passive smoking.

We have decided our current policy was proving ineffective in combating the very real risks to non-smokers of passive smoking.

As a leading higher education provider in health sciences it is important for EIT to demonstrate leadership in significant public health issues.

With a smokefree campus, we will provide a healthier and cleaner environment where staff and students can thrive and take pride in the institute.

EIT is providing quit-smoking support in conjunction with the HB District Health Board. In particular students and staff can access quit-smoking support through the Health Centre service on campus including nicotine patches, gum and lozenges. These items combined provide a sound method to support the smoker to “kick the habit”.

In working towards a “totally smokefree EIT the institute invites those with questions to visit www.eit.ac.nz/smokefree for the policy and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) listing.

If you would like to lodge questions there is a discussion group available on our facebook page (see www.facebook.com/eithawkesbay).

A database recently launched at EIT will provide genealogists and other researchers the opportunity to easily research women who have pursued academia in New Zealand.

Napier-based educational historian Kay Morris Matthews, who is a research professor at EIT, compiled the database alongside her successful book In Their Own Right.

It tells the story of women and higher education in New Zealand up until 1945 but there was not room in the book to include all the profiles of the women or the schools.

Dr Morris Matthews has traced the educational and career pathways of over 700 women graduates from the University of New Zealand 1877-1920 back to their secondary schooling and through to their careers in teaching and other professions in the period 1878-1950.

In addition, there is a listing of over 130 New Zealand girls’ secondary schools (1850>) with the names of the foundation principals.

The database has been designed for easy use and can be accessed at www.womeninhighereducation.eit.ac.nz.

It will be of particular use to family historians, secondary school and tertiary students providing unique information about individual educated women and a first-time listing of the girl’s secondary schools. The database is free to use.

For further information contact Kay Morris-Matthews on 974-8000 ext 5470

In the marketing section where I work, we’ve been working with online specialists Mogul who are based in Havelock North. Our aim is to establish an online marketing strategy so that we can keep in touch with our current students, our graduates as well as future students.

It’s been an interesting learning curve with our facebook page. At the recent Careers Expo we had a photo booth so that high school students could have their photos taken and then we put these onto our facebook page. Students have tagged their photos and now will be receiving updates from us about interesting things happening at EIT.

We’ve also got some cool video clips on the facebook page showing the photo shoot of our latest prospectus, the careers expo and the photo booth at the expo, and some of our facilities including the modern science labs and the fabulous beauty clinic.
