isPermaLink="false">http://www.fruitbowl.co.nz/?p=6845</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>The Waimarama floods caused a lot of damage and turned the Waimarama stream into a raging river - taking out toilets, camping spots and access to the beach north of the patrolled area.</p><p>While it probably wasn't the most important thing the council had to do it was obvious that without having some sort of access to the beach, many people would be very frustrated and end up cutting their own tracks.</p><p>After a call to the council they had a look and in a very short time created a new roadway down to the beach.  If there is a silver lining in the floods, the river mouth now has a huge sandy area and has become a great spot for families.</p><p><img

isPermaLink="false">http://www.fruitbowl.co.nz/?p=5632</guid> <description><![CDATA[<p>When I'm travelling I always describe where I'm from as 'Hawkes Bay'.  I regularly have meetings in Napier, Hastings and Havelock North. Growing up in Greenmeadows I didn't want to live in Napier where I grew up so chose Havelock North but I still think of myself as 'back home'.</p><p>In last weeks HB Today I was asked how I felt about amalgamation.  I responded that as a frequent traveller I see how other regions get coordinated and compete and that it must be a waste of money having services repeated by 3 different authorities. I also commented that it requires some leadership and vision to paint the picture and bring people together.</p><p>Chris Tremain published a plan for the Bay which was also in the paper.</p><p>I've known Chris since our days at Napier Boys High School. Anyone that knows Chris knows that he is one of those guys that always make a positive difference. I have no idea why people would go through the pain of being a politician but I'm very glad that Chris does it - he's the sort of guy you want to have looking after you.</p><p>Craig, Chris (blue) and Stuart (red) have over the past 6 years been looking after the interests of the Bay by spending a lot of time outside - so I think they provide a useful perspective.</p><p>I thought Chris's approach to the amalgamation issue is sensible and I really liked him putting up a plan.</p><p><a

That would be fantastic,</p><p>However there is no information at the airport.  I arrived back from a trip mid week and tried to whack my parking card in as did many others.  Eventually we worked out the barrier arms were up and you could just drive out.  Today, several days later, still no info.</p><p>New technology should be something to get excited by and can easily intimidate some people so I don't understand why the airport isn't jumping on the opportunity to make the transition process simple and easy. A simple sign by the machines would be a start.</p><p>They do have an updated picture on their website but no information.  <a

What strikes you is how localized it is.  Until you head past TeMata Peak everything seems normal but as you get closer to the coast you can see the massive damage.</p><p>Almost every hillside paddock has significantly slips.</p><p><a

We didn't get to Gillies Ave but heard a few people have lost everything.  There is a massive clean up operation required and many people who will appreciate assistance over the next few months.</p><p>It amazes me how quickly the council and contractors have been to open up access.
