Calls for New Trust for Cranford

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule is promoting the establishment of a separate trust to run palliative care in Hawke's Bay.

This push follows DHB Chief Executive Kevin Snee’s announcement last week that the Hawke’s Bay District Health Board will be reviewing the governance arrangements for Cranford House.

“I cannot sit back and watch what‘s happening here. Cranford is closing its in-house bed unit on May 17 and it’s a disgrace that it has come to this,” Mayor Yule says.

“I am doing what I can to stop the closure but I’m concerned it can’t be avoided. A lack of medical staff is the principal reason for the closure and fixing that in the short-term is a difficult task.

“I’ve had numerous requests to set up a separate trust to solely concentrate on running Cranford, including the outpatient care service. There have even been suggestions an existing trust could be modified to take on Cranford,” Mayor Yule says.

“As I have investigated the issues involved it’s clear to me that a complete new start is needed at the governance level. Presbyterian support has advanced Cranford in some areas but it’s time for a specialist Trust to take over, similar to the trust which runs the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter Service.

“A number of people have come to me over the weekend expressing significant concern about the damage to Cranford’s name in the community and the affect that will have on the great fundraising events that support it. I’m confident that Hawke’s Bay people just want to support and fund Cranford.

“This Trust could work much more closely with the DHB to give the best possible care to our community. It needs to be simple, transparent and clearly understood. I know people will support this,” Mayor Yule says.

Let’s get behind Cranford

Well what a bombshell in the announcement of the temporary closure of beds at Cranford Hospice. The most loved facility in Hawkes Bay will no longer be the sanctuary for those leaving us and their loved ones. I am sorry, but there is no way that the Hospital can replicate this restful caring environment.
I have read the report and there are a lot of issues to be resolved. Many people will have various views on what is wrong here. The decision to temporarily close has not been taken lightly but all those involved have some responsibility.
I am proud of Cranford and I am greatly saddened by its current situation. It gets nearly 1 million dollars of donations each year from us. So let’s quickly fix it, restore the confidence, make the changes and move on. I am going to do all I can to make sure that this closure is indeed temporary. Six months cannot be allowed to become a year etc. So let’s all get behind supporting Cranford. At the moment it needs us.

Airport extension

After significant work, it's now thrilling to see the Hawke's Bay Airport runway extension put out to tender which will make the airport jet capable. After years of negotiation between councils and the Crown the airport company is at last allowed to realise the potential of the infrastructure. Calling for tenders for this work is a significant milestone in the future of Hawke's Bay - Congratulations.

Harvest Hawke’s Bay

I went to Harvest Hawke's Bay on Saturday, which was held for the first time at a central venue - HDC's own Roys Hill site.
On the day I asked around 50 people what they thought of the event and without fail they all loved it and so did I. More than 3000 attended and many stayed well after the entertainment was over.
In the days after, reports in the paper have been less than complimentary and I'm wondering what the general consensus is... Did people have a good time? Would you go again next year? Is there anything that can be done to improve the event next time around?

I’m proud to announce that Hawke’s Bay Opera House has been awarded a five-star Qualmark rating – just more proof it is an international standard facility in Hastings, the Heart of Hawke’s Bay.

Hawke’s Bay has so many positive things to offer and I’m really impressed with how Fruitbowl is taking that story to the world.
